Ruthless Senate upholds Mike Sonko impeachment

The Senate has upheld a decision to Nairobi City County Governor Mike Sonko from office by impeachment. – By Gerald Gekara.

The flamboyant Governor was sent home by a ruthless Senate, which voted over 4 charges.

In all the charges; 27 senators upheld the charges, while 16 chose to oppose.

However, two senators chose to abstain the vote; one of them being Nairobi senator Johnson Sakaja.

Sonko fell out with President Uhuru Kenyatta over the decision to handover key functions to the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS).

He currently has an active corruption case in court, and was ordered to stay away from his office until the case is settled.

Speaker of Nairobi Benson Mutura will stand in as acting governor since Nairobi does not have a deputy governor.
