President William Ruto’s government has revived the Kazi Mtaani program now rebadged as the Climate Workx Youth Employment Initiative injecting Ksh.5 billion into the effort to provide short-term jobs for over 113,000 youth across 46 counties.
The program kicks off at the end of June 2025 and will run for six months.
However, Nairobi County Kenya’s capital and home to thousands of unemployed youth has been excluded. The government claims the city already has a parallel initiative supporting 20,000 young people.
The initiative is open to youth aged 20–35, with only one family member allowed to register. The online registration window is just 10 days, after which shortlisted candidates will face a manual vetting process conducted by chiefs and assistant chiefs.
“This time we’re targeting low-income families. It’s about dignity, income, and national pride,” said Housing PS Charles Hinga.
Interior PS Raymond Omollo stressed the new rollout would avoid the “political manipulation” that marred previous rounds. Roads PS Joseph Mbugua added that tasks will focus on climate-resilient work — including maintaining pathways, bridges, and drainage.
Interestingly, the relaunch comes despite Ruto once publicly mocking Kazi Mtaani as a Deputy President, claiming it was unsustainable and ineffective.
Yet now, at mid-term, the Head of State seems to have had a change of heart… or a political epiphany to address rising unemployment and restless youth.
