President William Ruto has told UDA legislators that he is not interested in changing the constitution to remove term limits.
Speaking when chairing the Kenya kwanza Parliamentary Group meeting at State House on Wednesday morning, Ruto said that the MPs should prioritise bills that will better the lives of Kenyans.
“Do not spend your time pushing for selfish and self-serving legislation, like changing the Constitution to remove term limits…. my focus is service to the people,” he said.
Salah Yakub, a Fafi MP, sparked outrage two weeks ago when he claimed that some UDA lawmakers were working on a constitutional amendment Bill to repeal the two-term presidential term limit and replace it with a 75-year age limit.
The proposed changes would allow President Ruto to lead Kenya’s government for 20 years, through four terms.
If the MPs have their way, Ruto, who is 55, will be eligible to run in elections in 2027, 2032, and 2037.
