President William Ruto is set to fly to Dubai today for the much-anticipated 28th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP 28).
According to a statement released by State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohammed on Thursday, Ruto will deliver a statement on behalf of all African presidents.
Among the key issues he will address are the continent’s priorities as outlined in the historic African Leaders Nairobi Declaration, which was adopted at the inaugural Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi in September 2023.
“President William Ruto will depart today for the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in the United Arab Emirates, advocating for Kenya and Africa’s climate agenda,” read the statement.
“Kenya and Africa possess vast natural resources, a growing workforce, and untapped renewable energy potential, positioning them to contribute significantly to global climate action while pursuing sustainable development. President Ruto aims to establish Kenya and Africa as key hubs for green manufacturing, supporting the global decarbonization agenda.”
During the event, Ruto will also spearhead the launch of the Africa Green Industrialisation Initiative and advocate for a new climate finance framework.
