President William Ruto has launched the construction of the Muhuru Bay Pier in Nyatike, Migori County, as part of his administration’s push to tap into the vast economic opportunities offered by Lake Victoria.
The pier is expected to play a key role in reducing post-harvest fish losses, boosting fisherfolk earnings, and enhancing transport and trade in the region. It will also support the broader development of the blue economy by improving infrastructure for fisheries and water-based commerce.

“We are harnessing Lake Victoria’s huge potential, including fisheries, aquaculture, tourism and transportation, to spur growth, create jobs and reduce poverty,” President Ruto said during the launch.
The project is part of ongoing government efforts to promote sustainable livelihoods and economic transformation in lakefront counties. Local leaders hailed the development as a timely intervention that will uplift communities dependent on the lake.
With improved facilities and access to wider markets, the Muhuru Bay Pier is expected to be a game-changer for the fishing industry and a catalyst for regional development.
