Ruto Meets With Somalia, South Sudan, Congo Presidents

President William Ruto met with the presidents of Somalia, Congo and South Sudan on Wednesday at State House in Nairobi.

Through his Twitter handle, Ruto stated that his discussions with President Mohamed Mohamud focused on the security situation in Somalia and the Horn of Africa.

Both Somalia and Kenya have suffered the brunt of terrorist attacks from the Al-Qaeda-linked militant group, Al-Shabaab, who have continued to pose terrorism threats in the region.

The Head of State who was sworn into office Tuesday said that his administration will collaborate with Mohamud’s government to boost trade and ease the movement of goods and people between the two countries.

“We will fast track the implementation of the Joint Commission for Cooperation between Kenya and Somalia. This will boost trade in Miraa and fish and ease movement between our two nations,” he said.

Shortly after, Ruto met with South Sudan President Salva Kiir in bilateral talks about various bilateral agreements and areas of cooperation, such as security and regional infrastructure development.

“We are working with South Sudan in enhancing intra-African trade through the strengthening of the East African Community and other regional economic blocs in the continent.”

The Head of state also met the Republic of the Congo President Denis Sassou Nguesso where they hold talks on how to boost agriculture between the countries.

“There is tremendous potential for agriculture in both Kenya and the Republic of the Congo which we are keen to exploit to make both countries food secure.”
