A section of legislators allied to Deputy President William Ruto walked out of a Justice and Legal Affairs Committee meeting to discuss the controversial political parties bill, claiming that there were non-parliamentarians present.
Aden Duale of Garissa Township, his Kikuyu counterpart Kimani Ichungwa, and Alice Wahome of Kandara claimed that the invitation was just for members.
They objected to the presence of the Registrar of Political Parties, the chairperson of the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal, and other stakeholders in the Political Parties (Amendment) Bill 2021.
“On protocol, based on the letter I have received to engage this committee,” Duale remarked as he walked out. On Wednesday, I will put the amendments into effect on the floor.”
Ichung’wa and Wahome followed suit. Kipkelion East MP Joseph Limo followed them.
MPs Didmus Barasa, Owen Baya, Daniel Tuitoek, and John Mutunga were among those who walked out.
Kangema MP Muturi Kigano presided over the meeting, ruling that stakeholders had the right to remain in the room without contributing to the discussions.a
The conference was organized to allow members who had proposed revisions to discuss them and have them harmonised.
