Ruto Nominates John Cox Lorionokou as Registrar of Political Parties

President William Ruto has nominated John Cox Lorionokou for the Registrar of Political Parties position.

This comes after the vacancy was left by Ann Nderitu’s appointment as a commissioner for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

At the same time, the President has nominated Agatha Wanjiku Wahome to be the Assistant Registrar of Political Parties.

“President William Ruto, in line with his constitutional mandate, and acting on the recommendations of the Public Service Commission, has today made the following nominations in the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties Mr. John Cox Lorionokou – Registrar of Political Parties Ms. Agatha Wanjiku Wahome – Assistant Registrar of Political Parties,” read the statement.

The duo was shortlisted by the Public Service Commission after the application window closed on 5th August 2025.

The PSC had shortlisted a total of 10 candidates for the Registrar position, while another 10 had been named for the Assistant Registrar role.

”To reform and transform the public service for efficient and effective service delivery. The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties shortlisted candidates for the positions of Registrar of Political Parties and Assistant Registrar of Political Parties. The Political Parties Act, Cap 7D,” the notice read in part.

”After considering the applications, the commission shortlisted candidates,” the notice continued.

For the Registrar of Political Parties, the shortlisted candidates included Ali Abdullah Surrar and Sophia Sitati, who had been appointed Acting Registrar following the departure of Ann Nderitu.

Sitati previously served as Chief State Counsel in the Office of the Attorney General.

Other candidates include Geoffrey Obonyo, Everlyne Koiyan, Alloys Ndege, Mercy Wambua, Dr Manana Rodgers, Rahma Jillo and Florence Tabu Birya.

For the Assistant Registrar position, the PSC has shortlisted Seth Onyango, Simon Nyamolo, Josephine Ergaoe, Chebet Koske, Julius Cheche, Peter Muthui, Mohammed Abdullahi Abdi, Robert Borter, and Gilbert Opanga.

The assistant is expected to support the Registrar in executing regulatory and supervisory duties under the Political Parties Act.

The Registrar of Political Parties plays an important role in overseeing the registration, regulation, and monitoring of political parties in Kenya.

The office also administers the Political Parties Fund and ensures compliance with the Political Parties Act, making it one of the most pivotal roles in Kenya’s political landscape.
