Ruto Trashes ‘Board Room’ Opinion Polls

William Ruto, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) presidential candidate, now claims that opinion polls are rigged in favor of his Azimio la Umoja opponent Raila Odinga.

Ruto claimed on Monday in Matungu, Kakamega county, that Kenya Kwanza is better than Azimio la Umoja, which is why the coalition is having the polls corrupted.

“Wamebaki na opinion poll. Wanaenda wanatafuta mzungu mwingine hapo, wanamwambia fanyia sisi ukarabati ya opinion polls.. Ati sijui nani ako nyuma, nani ako mbele,” he said.

His remarks came on the heels of a new poll released Monday by Trends and Insights Africa (TIFA) that reported Raila to be the most popular presidential candidate, with 42% of Kenyan voters supporting his election compared to  Ruto’s 39%.

The DP, on the other hand, urged his supporters and Kenyans in general to dismiss the polls.

He claimed to have a better economic plan than Raila.

“I want to urge you not to worry. We have defeated them (Azimio) in everything;  in our agenda, our manifesto and plans,” Ruto said.

According to TIFA, the margin of error for the poll was +/- 2.34. It took place between June 25 and June 30, 2022.

Tifa’s Monday poll, which gave Raila a narrow lead over Ruto, was a slight improvement over the same research firm’s poll in May.

In the May poll, the former prime minister received 39% of the vote to the DP’s 35%.

Despite Raila’s lead, the survey found that Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance party was the most popular, with 33% approval rating compared to Raila’s ODM, which had 26%.

In the May poll, UDA received 29% of the vote, while ODM received 25%.
