Coast Azimio Leaders Slam Ruto Over Gender Promise

Deputy President William Ruto has come under sharp criticism over his two-third gender rule program with critics claiming that he has no role for women in his administration.

Kilifi Azimio leaders speaking in different political rallies in Watamu, Dabaso, Matsangoni and Ruruma said his failure to appoint a woman as running mate was the first sign of a government not ready to serve women.

The leaders led by Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Kilifi gubernatorial nominee Gideon Mungaro said Dr Ruto was insincere.

“If he says that he will implement the gender rule in his administration, he did not bother to go for a woman as running mate. That is a sign of a leader who cares less about women. If you look at our Azimio Presidential candidate Raila Odinga, he went for a woman running mate, opening the gate for more women empowerment in his regime,” said Mungaro.

He further added that he himself decided to implement the same by picking Flora Chibule as her running mate in implementing the gender rule.

“We are not promising because in implementing the two-third gender rule I picked Ms Chibule as my running mate. That is what we need to show by example and not promises. The others are prophets of doom,” he said.

Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo also poked holes into DP William Ruto’s two-third gender rule saying that he was misleading Kenyans.

“How do you say that you can implement a two-third gender rule while in real terms you are filling your top appointments with men instead of women. That is a daylight lie,” he said.

Kilifi youth Azimio leader Fikirini Jacobs said the DP was lying to Kenyans that he will implement the two-third gender rule while in reality, he is doing the opposite. He said the only leader people can bank on is Raila Odinga who has shown his love and care for women in this country.

“The DP went ahead and picked Rigathi Gachagua as his running mate. If he was serious about gender then he would have gone for a woman running mate. Mr Odinga went for Martha Karua, clearly defining where he stands for when it comes to gender. So the only leader we can bank on to address gender issues is Mr Odinga,” said Mr Jacobs
