Rwanda has extradited Salman Khan, alias Salma, a 39-year-old Indian national wanted for his alleged links to a terror group operating in India.
The extradition, announced by the Rwanda Bureau of Investigations (RIB) on Wednesday, underscores Kigali’s commitment to combating cross-border crime.
Khan was arrested in Kigali following an Interpol red notice issued by India on August 2, 2023.
The RIB revealed that the suspect was implicated in radicalization activities against the Indian government.
After confirming his presence in Rwanda, authorities notified New Delhi through Interpol and formally received an extradition request on October 28.
Rwanda’s Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Emmanuel Ugirashebuja, issued the extradition order on November 12.
Despite the absence of a formal extradition treaty between the two nations, a reciprocal agreement was established to expedite the case.
“This extradition demonstrates Rwanda’s resolve to ensure the country does not become a haven for criminals,” the RIB stated.
The arrangement allows for mutual extradition of criminals between the two nations, marking a milestone in bilateral cooperation.
Khan’s extradition highlights Rwanda’s proactive stance against terrorism while strengthening its international partnerships in law enforcement.
