Sabaki Bridge on Brink of Collapse After Heavy Rains, Emergency Repairs Underway

The Sabaki River bridge in Kilifi County is teetering on the verge of collapse following days of heavy downpour that have severely eroded its embankment.

The deteriorating condition of the bridge, which connects key towns in the coastal region, has raised alarm over public safety and the structural integrity of the vital infrastructure.

The Kilifi County Government, through the Department of Special Programs and Disaster Management, confirmed that its Beach Safety Team had been deployed to the area to ensure the safety of residents and motorists.

This comes after a video surfaced online showing the extent of the damage, prompting public outcry and immediate government attention.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has dispatched engineers to the site to commence emergency repairs.

The intervention aims to stabilize the eroded section and prevent a possible disaster.

“We take this concern seriously and thank the public for bringing it to our attention,” read a statement from the county government.

“We are actively working with national agencies and urge the public to avoid the affected areas.”

Residents have been advised to follow safety instructions and steer clear of the bridge as works progress.

The county also reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property as it advocates for long-term infrastructure solutions.

The Sabaki bridge serves as a lifeline for regional transport and trade. Any disruption could have far-reaching consequences across Kilifi and surrounding counties.
