Sabina Chege, a nominated member of parliament, lost her position as Deputy Minority Whip in the National Assembly on Monday.
Chege’s case in Kiambu Court to challenge Azimio la Umoja’s decision to fire her was dismissed on Monday.
As a result, Mark Muriithi Mwenje, MP for Embakasi West, will be the new Depurity Minority Whip in the 13th Parliament.
“We now demand that the Speaker, Moses Wetangula ratifies the decision to allow Hon. Mark Mwenje to serve,” a statement by Jubilee Party read in part.Â
The Jubilee Party has been embroiled in a protracted legal battle over leadership, with the Chege-led faction battling the Uhuru-led wing for control of the party and millions in the bank.
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has indicated that he will not leave the party, keeping his allies in key positions despite the fallout with the Chege and Kanini Kega groups, which have since moved to work with Kenya Kwanza.
Azimio had attempted unsuccessfully to replace Chege on May 4, but Wetangula stopped the move, ruling that the coalition had failed to provide a replacement.
“The communication received from the Minority Party on the decision to oust Sabina Chege is incomplete and therefore does not comply with the requirements of Standing Order 20(A) of the National Assembly,” Wetangula ruled then.Â
Azimio subsequently nominated the Embakasi West MP but Chege through her lawyer Dennis Kivuti moved to court to object to her ouster.
“Pending hearing and determination of the case, the Honorable Court be pleased to issue such further or other order(s) as it may deem just and expedient for the end of justice,” the court ruled in JuneÂ
Following that decision, Speaker Wetangula stated that Chege would continue to perform her duties until the courts ruled on the matter.
“Honourable members from the foregoing, my hands are tied with regard to the court order that has been brought to my attention,” he stated then.
