Safaricom Hosts First Gaming Conference to Boost Africa’s Digital Creativity

By Michelle Ndaga

Safaricom has staged its inaugural Gaming Conference at the Michael Joseph Centre in Nairobi, an event designed to showcase the potential of gaming as a driver of youth empowerment, digital creativity, and economic growth across Africa.

Themed “Level Up Africa: Unlocking Gaming Potential in Africa,” the forum brought together gamers, developers, investors, and policymakers to discuss the opportunities and challenges shaping the continent’s growing gaming ecosystem.

Sessions highlighted the need for stronger policy frameworks, greater investment in local talent, and infrastructure to support eSports and game development.

Safaricom’s Chief Consumer Business Officer, Fawzia Ali-Kimanthi, underscored the company’s commitment to the industry, noting that gaming represents more than entertainment it offers pathways to careers, innovation, and thriving digital communities.

Beyond panel discussions, the conference blended technology with pop culture through cosplay, live music, exhibitions, and interactive gaming showcases, creating an immersive experience for participants.

Safaricom has previously supported eSports through its youth brand BLAZE, sponsored online gaming challenges, and powered major events such as the Otamatsuri Gaming Convention with its 5G network. The company says these initiatives are part of its long-term plan to nurture a sustainable gaming industry in Africa.
