Safaricom PLC has reassured its customers that their data is safe and urged them to register their SIM lines at MPESA outlets.
The telco joined Communications Authority in a campaign to Sensitise Kenyans on compliance to SIM Card registration.
Safaricom Chief Security and Systems Officer Nicholas Mulila in a press briefing reassured Kenyans that the exercise was solely meant to curb crime
“At Safaricom, we have been taking photos and the reason has been basically to enhance security of the resources and data of our customers.”
He urged Safaricom customers to register their lines at any MPESA agents countrywide.
The SIM Card registration exercise has been largely successful amid concerns that the timing of the exercise was linked to the 2022 polls.
However Communications Authority CEO Ezra Chiloba said the exercise was a response to rising cases of crime and fraudulent SIM Card registration.
He assured Kenyans that the safety of their data was paramount and the government would do everything to safeguard it.
