Nairobi governor-elect, Johnson Arthur Sakaja, revealed that he spent Ksh15 million on agents during the August 9 elections.
speaking during an interview on Citizen TV, Sakaja criticized the country’s electoral process, claiming that it places a significant financial burden on political candidates.
Sakaja stated that he had 3,643 agents spread across Nairobi’s polling stations and that they had devoured a cool Ksh.15 million.
The Nairobi Governor-elect stated that he could only afford to pay the agents for three days and that his supporters provided service for free for the additional days consumed by the vote tallying and verification exercise.
“We need to have an electronic transmission for our polls. I have just finished sorting out my agents. It cost me Ksh.15 million. I had 3643 agents for 3 days of work the rest ilikua kujitolea,” said Sakaja.
He also stated that he had 396 polling center managers and mobilizers, all of whom compensated for additional expenses.
Sakaja, who was running on a UDA ticket, won the Nairobi Governor race with 699,392 votes, defeating his competitor Polycarp Igathe of the Jubilee Party, who received 573,516 votes.
