Sakaja Orders Release Of All Impounded Motorbikes

Sakaja asked the City Inspectorate to identify official drop-off and pick-up points within Nairobi for the Boda Boda operators.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has ordered for all motorbikes impounded by Nairobi County released to the owners and all cases withdrawn with immediate effect.

During a meeting with county workers on Monday, August 29, Sakaja asked the City Inspectorate to identify official drop-off and pick-up points within Nairobi for the Boda Boda operators.

Hundreds of motorbikes were impounded after President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered a countrywide crackdown on rogue boda boda riders to streamline the sector following an incident where a female motorist was sexually harassed by riders along Wangari Maathai Road in Nairobi.

Nairobi Metropolitan Services stated in July that they planned to release all boda boda motorcycles impounded within Nairobi before the elections.

NMS Director General Mohammed Badi stated that he will discuss the matter with Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai.

“Some boda boda had been impounded, I shall consult with IG and ensure they get released before elections,” he said.

Badi admitted that rogue law enforcement officers have victimized boda boda operators.

“Since I took over Nairobi  I have worked closely with the boda boda associations. It is true that boda boda operators have been harassed by rogue enforcement officers.”
