Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has banned demonstrations in the capital, following a directive from Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o.
In response to Nyong’o’s request for protesters to gather in Nairobi, Sakaja stated unequivocally that no demonstrations would be held in the city in the future.
The governor added that the county had taken a huge hit as a result of the protests led by Raila Odinga’s faction.
“Nairobi County has already hosted two of these demonstrations. We’ve borne the cost of the disruption so far: Nairobians have patiently put up with the disruption, and their taxes have paid for its aftermath.
“In the spirit of devolution, I would advice the Governor Nyong’o, to keep his demonstrations to his County. It has been decided that further protests and demonstrations shall similarly no longer,” read the statement in part.
This comes after Nyong’o called off the public demonstrations in his county and urged his supporters to join other protesters in Nairobi.
The Governor indicated that the suspension of the demonstrations followed consultations with the Azimio la Umoja’s National leadership and County Executive Committee.
“However, after detailed consultations with the Azimio National leadership and the County Executive Committee (the cabinet), I wish to (announce) that all public demonstrations within Kisumu County have, from today, been suspended indefinitely so that we can join the demonstrations in Nairobi,” Nyong’o stated.
