SRC Pushes For More Travel Allowance For State Officers

The Salary and Remuneration Commission (SRC) is currently proposing an increase in travel allowances for State personnel assigned to tasks in locations other than Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nakuru.

SRC’s plan seeks to update the present rates, which have been in effect since 2017 and are based on work groupings, as well as to expand the number of towns where hire rates will be applied.

According to the current rates, those who stay in Nairobi earn 67% more than those who visit other places that do not have city status.

Daily local travel allowances for government personnel whose postings are outside of cities, county headquarters, Malindi, and Naivasha will be increased by between Ksh.1,200 and Ksh.8,000 as a result of the revisions.

The proposed increases will raise the minimum per diem for local travel from 40% to 66.7 percent, depending on the employment group.

The commission transmitted their suggestion to the National Treasury and the Office of the Chief of Public Service for comment.

If passed, the idea will result in an increase in the already bloated public salary bill in an already suffering economy. In the fiscal year 2021/2022, the country’s overall wage bill reached Ksh.1.055 trillion.
