At least 17 schoolchildren and four teachers were injured on Tuesday when their bus overturned on the Rukenya-Kimunye road in Kirinyaga County.
Njema Falls Primary School students and teachers who sustained head, hand, and leg injuries were rushed to Kerugoya Referral Hospital for treatment.
According to witnesses, the bus swerved before veering off the road and rolling several times.
“It was a lucky escape for the young learners,” a witness said.
Following the accident, Good Samaritans rushed to the scene and rescued the trapped students and teachers on the ill-fated bus. He stated that 15 students and teachers were treated and discharged.
According to Kirinyaga East Sub-County Police Commander Anthony Wanjuu, the victims were on their way to school when the accident occurred.
“Currently two pupils have been admitted to the hospital,” he said.
Mr. Wanjuu stated that investigations have been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident.
The bus was towed to Kianyaga police station for inspection.
