Scores Feared Trapped as Four-Storey Building Collapses in Kisii

A four-storey building under construction collapsed on Sunday, April 6, in the Itierio area of Kisii County, leaving an unknown number of people feared trapped beneath the rubble.

The incident occurred near Itierio Mixed Primary School in Suneka, with reports indicating the collapsed structure also fell onto neighbouring homes and businesses.

Emergency response teams from Kisii County, including police and rescue personnel, are currently at the scene, leading search and rescue efforts. Excavators have been deployed to assist in clearing the debris and locating any survivors.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as the structure came down, sending clouds of dust and debris across the area.

“We heard a loud crash, and when we rushed out, the entire building had caved in,” said a local resident.

Businesses surrounding the collapsed site have also suffered damage, and unconfirmed reports suggest incidents of looting amid the confusion.

The cause of the collapse has yet to be established, though investigations are expected to begin immediately. County officials have called for calm as rescue operations continue.

This tragic incident comes amid growing concerns over the safety of ongoing construction projects in various parts of the country.
