Seasoned Journalist Linus Kaikai among 916 advocates admitted to the bar

Royal Media Services (RMS) Group Editorial Director, Linus Kaikai, has been admitted to the Bar as Advocate of the High Court of Kenya.

Kaikai was part of a group of 916 petitioners admitted at the Supreme Court on Thursday, November 20, in a ceremony presided over by Chief Justice Martha Koome.

The admission saw petitioners take their oaths before the Chief Justice and sign the Roll of Advocates.

During the admission ceremony, Senior Counsel Philip Murgor, the Chairperson of the Senior Counsel Bar (SCB), asked the new advocates to uphold character and integrity.

“Winning at all costs will cost you too. Many times, you will be called upon to speak for citizens; please never shy away from that, as the law is both a calling and a public duty. During the Gen Z protests, hundreds of young demonstrators were detained. The calling of a lawyer in such circumstances is to lead the way and provide pro bono services,” SC Murgor remarked.

Speaking during the ceremony, Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo highlighted the commitment and solidarity expected of those joining the profession.

“You are a generation that refuses to work in silence. As you enter the law practice, remember that justice is not a slogan it is a long-term commitment. Ours is a profession built on standing up for one another,” she said.

Law Society of East Africa President Ramadhan Abubakar also highlighted the influence and responsibility that comes with being admitted to the bar.

“From today, your words carry weight and your actions shape institutions. Your practice can no longer be confined by borders. You can now practice in all East African countries. The lawyer who sees the region shapes the future,” he said.

Kaikai pursued a diploma in Radio & Television Production at the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC).

He later earned a Master’s degree in International Journalism, with sources indicating either Masinde Muliro University of Science & Technology or the University of Westminster in the UK.

Kaikai began his journalism career at Kenya Television Network (KTN), where he worked until 1999.

During this period, he won the 1997 CNN African Television Journalist 1st Prize and was named Environmental Journalist of the Year in 1998.

He then spent approximately eight years at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), rising from correspondent to Bureau Chief.

He returned to KTN in 2007 as Managing Editor, overseeing quality and product development, before moving to NTV (Nation Media Group) in senior editorial roles.

Kaikai also served as Chairman of the Kenya Editors’ Guild (KEG), reflecting his leadership in the Kenyan media space.

He later joined Royal Media Services (RMS), which runs Citizen TV, serving as Group Editorial Director and Head of Strategy and Innovation.
