A section of the busy Embu-Meru highway was closed on Tuesday morning due to cracks in the Ikong’u bridge in Kiagima, Embu West sub-county.
The soil in one part of the busy bridge began to cave in, resulting in a crack that forced the road to be closed and traffic redirected.
Embu County Police Commander Nicholas Maina urged motorists on the route to follow traffic police directions for alternative routes.
Those heading to Nairobi from Meru have been advised to divert at Kivwe Market through Muthatari and back to the highway in Embu town, while those headed to Meru are to divert at Mutunduri through Manyatta, Kianjokoma, and back to the highway in Runyenjes.
This comes amid heavy rains being experienced in most parts of the country.
