A multi-agency security team successfully executed an intelligence-led operation targeting an al-Shabaab base in the Alango area of Garissa County on Saturday, July 27.
The operation was a proactive measure aimed at dismantling a group known to harbor Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) experts and other militants in the region, which has been identified as a breeding ground for terrorist activities.
The operation unfolded along the Garissa-Dadaab Road, where security forces intercepted and ambushed the militants as they prepared for a potential attack from their hideout in a densely forested area south of Alango.
According to police reports, two suspected al-Shabaab militants were killed during the confrontation, while others managed to escape, reportedly with injuries.
“This timely intervention by our security forces has thwarted a planned attack, potentially saving many lives,” stated a police spokesperson. “We are actively pursuing the fleeing suspects and have put measures in place to apprehend them.”
During the raid, authorities seized a substantial cache of weapons and materials believed to be intended for future attacks.
The recovery included two AK-47 rifles, seven magazines, and various materials for making IEDs, alongside an assortment of food items typically used to sustain the militants in their hideout.
The incident underscores the ongoing security challenges in Garissa County, particularly concerning the activities of al-Shabaab, which has been responsible for numerous attacks targeting both civilians and security personnel in the region. The area has been a hotspot for the terrorist organization, which continues to pose a significant threat to both local and national security.
In response to the operation, police have called on the general public to remain vigilant and assist security forces by reporting any sightings of the injured suspects or suspicious activities in their communities.
“Collaboration with the public is crucial in our fight against terrorism. We urge everyone to be our eyes and ears on the ground,” the police spokesperson added.
