‘Security was on WhatsApp’ – Gachagua drops bombshell, explains why Ruto has been consistently attacked

Former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua has expressed fury over the repeated presidential breaches following the Kilifi incident on Sunday, May 24.

President William Ruto was nearly attacked when a man pushed his way to the podium and hugged him, leading to tension among his supporters.

Speaking on Monday, May 24, Gachagua accused Ruto’s security team of ‘sleeping on their duty,’ noting that the breaches could lead to fatal attacks, thus causing tension in the country.

Further, he claimed that the head of state has ‘been careless with the management of the country.’

“This is a very sad state of affairs. You cannot take your security recklessly and in a careless manner because if anything happened to you, there would be chaos in this country. I want Ruto to be safe because it is important for the stability of the country. I want the dignity of the office of the president restored,” Gachagua said.

The opposition leader claimed that Ruto’s presidential security team is ethnicised, making other communities demoralised to guard the president.

According to Gachagua, the officers are unprofessional and only carry out the mandates because of their shared ethnicity.

“They have a sense of entitlement; that is why there is laxity and sheer recklessness around the president. Again, there is corruption in that department. When these officers travel, there are allowances. The DIG, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, and immediate security commander demand half of the allowances for them to be allocated to guard the president. So they are very demoralised and unhappy. Even after half of the allowances were taken, they have not received their shares for four months,” he said, adding that the officers question the motive when they guard millions of shillings daily, “That is why they are not bothered. They do not care.”

The DCP leader urged Ruto to allow all communities to serve him, noting that his tribesmen have failed him and let him be exposed because of their alleged unprofessionalism and entitlement.

According to Gachagua, the team was on social platforms during the Kilifi incident, which led to the change of Ruto’s presidential security team.

“The president is totally exposed and surrounded by jokers. He has no security. I am told most of those who were guarding him yesterday had been busy on WhatsApp and TikTok. They were only realising the president had been accosted half a minute later,” he claimed.

He demanded that Murkomen be fired immediately due to alleged irresponsibility and possible serious breakdown of law and order.
