Senate Slams Uasin Gishu Over Stalled Ksh. 1.1B Stadium Project

The Senate County Public Accounts Committee has come down hard on Uasin Gishu County for the sluggish and substandard progress of the Ksh. 1.1 billion 64 Stadium in Eldoret, a project now marred by delays and alleged mismanagement.

Led by Committee Vice Chairperson and Taita Taveta Senator Johnes Mwaruma, the senators expressed frustration during an inspection tour, revealing that despite Ksh. 750 million already spent, the project remains less than 50% complete.

“This facility has become an eyesore,” Mwaruma remarked. “Taxpayers’ money is at stake. The county must engage the contractor through a return-to-work formula to resume and fast-track completion.”

The project, originally funded by the World Bank before the lender withdrew, was taken over by the county government. Despite revised deadlines, the new completion target has been pushed to December 2025 three years behind the initial 2022 schedule.

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei criticized the quality of work, stating, “The county claims 70% completion, but what we’ve seen barely amounts to half. This is a sports-rich area, and failing to deliver key infrastructure is a betrayal to our athletes.”

Other senators present Okong’o Omogeni (Nyamira), Mwenda Gataya (Tharaka Nithi), and Fatuma Dullo (Isiolo)—echoed concerns, warning of rising costs and diminishing returns if the pace is not urgently improved.

The committee has demanded accountability, urging the county to avoid further waste of public funds and ensure completion of the landmark facility.
