Senate Speaker Amason Jeffah Kingi has issued a directive barring all senators and Senate staff from traveling abroad for the next 12 days.
In a letter dated October 8, Kingi emphasized the importance of undivided focus on the upcoming impeachment proceedings for Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Kericho Governor Eric Mutai.
The letter called on lawmakers to suspend activities outside Nairobi to ensure their full participation in the critical Senate business.
“As you are aware, the Senate has substantive upcoming business for consideration. Given the gravity of these matters, it is paramount that we maintain a focused presence in the Senate,” the statement read.
Kingi’s directive follows a historic move by the Senate to conduct the impeachment hearing of the Deputy President—a first in Kenya’s constitutional history.
Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot had suggested forming a committee of 11 senators to handle the proceedings, but this was rejected by Minority Leader Edwin Sifuna, who called for full Senate involvement.
The hearings are scheduled for next week, with all senators required to deliberate and report their findings.
The directive aims to prioritize these proceedings without distractions. Deputy President Gachagua has been given until Monday to file his responses.
