Senate Speaker Declares Gloria Orwoba’s Seat Vacant Following UDA Expulsion

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has officially declared the Senate seat held by Gloria Orwoba vacant, following her expulsion from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) over alleged disloyalty and breach of party ideals.

The declaration was made through a gazette notice issued on Tuesday, citing Article 101(2) of the Constitution of Kenya. “It is notified for the general information of the public that pursuant to Article 101 (2) of the Constitution of Kenya, a seat of the member of the Senate elected under Article 98 (1)(b) of the Constitution, held by Gloria Orwoba, has become vacant with effect from the 21st May, 2025,” the notice stated.

Orwoba’s removal from the ruling party stemmed from a series of actions perceived as undermining party unity. Key among these was her high-profile presence at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on April 17 to receive former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, and her participation in his homecoming event at Gusii Stadium on May 2nd, events the party viewed as aligning with opposition elements.

Following her expulsion, UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar formally communicated with Speaker Kingi to trigger the vacancy process. In the same correspondence, Omar named Consolata Wabwire Wakwabubi, a nominee from Kimilili Constituency, Bungoma County, as Orwoba’s replacement.

“In accordance with the party’s nomination rules and based on the party list submitted to the IEBC prior to the 2022 General Election, the party has nominated Mrs. Consolata Wabwire Wakwabubi… to fill the resulting vacancy,” Omar stated.

With this declaration, the Senate is set to swear in Wabwire, pending the formal verification process, as UDA moves to reaffirm party discipline and consolidate its influence in the Senate.
