Nominated Senator Crystal Asige has raised concerns over the accessibility of voter registration centres, critiquing the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), warning that many persons with disabilities are being excluded from the electoral process.
Speaking on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, Asige reported that her personal audits of voter registration centers reveal they remain largely inaccessible to people with disabilities (PWDs).
According to Asige, her audits revealed a systemic failure by the commission to provide accessible entrances, exits, and ramps, as well as a lack of registration kits designed for those with disabilities.

“I unfortunately, with pain, want to report to the house that I have been to a couple of these centers where IEBC is performing these registrations of new voters, and I have done audits. Most of them are inaccessible to people with disabilities,” Asige stated.
“Speaker, I keep asking the question to IEBC, are your officers trained on disability assistance? Are your centers accessible in terms of having ramps, in terms of having entrances and exits that are accessible to people with disabilities?” she posed.
Asige linked these accessibility failures to a broader crisis involving uncollected National ID cards, which she argues is affecting the full participation of every single Kenyan.
She stressed that the goal of ushering in a new generation of leaders” is dependent on successfully registering a “new generation of voters.
“I would also like IEBC to address issues on uncollected IDs by the public because that continues to be an issue that will hinder the full participation of every single Kenyan when it comes to our elections next year. Speaker, because if we want a new generation of leaders, we will have to have a new generation of voters,” Asige stated.
