Kiambu County Senator Karungo Thang’wa has issued a firm ultimatum over the
ongoing doctors’ strike, which has now entered its 59th day and continues to cripple
healthcare services across the county. The prolonged industrial action has left
thousands of residents unable to access essential medical care, putting lives at risk.
In his statement, Senator Thang’wa acknowledged that the doctors have genuine
grievances regarding poor pay, unfavorable working conditions, and a lack of dignity in
the workplace. He emphasized that their efforts must be respected and properly
rewarded.
“The doctors’ demands are genuine. We must ensure they are treated with dignity, given
fair pay, and provided with proper working conditions,” he said.
Thang’wa also slammed the county government for failing to prioritize the health sector,
despite proudly reporting record revenue collection much of which, he pointed out,
comes from public hospitals.
“It is shameful that the county government refuses to invest in health workers and
infrastructure, yet continues to brag about collecting record revenues,” he said.
The senator has now given Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi a seven-day
ultimatum to resolve the crisis. If no action is taken within the week, Thang’wa warned
he will table a formal motion in the Senate to summon the governor and have him
explain what he termed as gross abdication of duty.
