Mithika Linturi, a Meru senator, has denied charges that he attempted to rape a woman in a hotel room.
Senator Linturi was released on a 500.000 bond, with a 200,000 cash bail alternative.
He was accused of breaking into a couple’s hotel room and attempting to rape a woman while the husband was away.
The claimed pair, Beryl Aokth, and her husband had booked a hotel at Maiyan Villas Resort in Nanyuki County, according to a statement from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Because her husband had remained behind, Akoth claims she returned to their room at night and retired to bed without closing the door.
However, later on she apparently heard someone knocking at 3 a.m. and decided not to wake up or turn on the lights since she assumed it was her spouse.
According to her, the person entered the room, sat down beside her in bed, and began to touch her in a “strange manner” before falling asleep with her.
Akoth stated she thought the man was her husband the entire time until they were forcibly awakened half an hour later by her husband hammering on the door.
It was then that she realized who was in her bed: a politician.
