Ferdinand Omanyala, Africa’s 100m record holder, is one of seven athletes to receive scholarships from the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA).
The funds will be used to help athletes prepare for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
Omanyala, the Commonwealth Games champion, stated that the funds will help him prepare for the Olympic Games in Paris.
“It is a perfect gift for me as we head towards the Olympic Games. My aim is to win the Olympic title in Paris and this support comes in handy as I believe it will help me perform better with less than two years to go,” said Omanyala.
Commonwealth 5000m champion Beatrice Chebet, Commonwealth 5000m silver medalist Nicholas Kimeli, and world 5000m silver medalist Jacob Krop are among those who benefited from the funds.
Other beneficiaries include world 10,000m bronze medalist Margaret Chelimo and Olympians Charles Simotwo and Abel Kipsang.
The funds will cover some of the costs they incur while training, according to National Olympic Committee of Kenya Secretary General Francis Mutuku, who spoke at an event in Eldoret.
“The basic aim is for their training. They incur costs in their training to cater for food and even for travels. This is therefore important as it will assist them in their preparations,” said Mutuku.
