Seven Dead, 16 Others Severely Injured In Bus Accident

A tragic road crash in the early hours of May 4, 2026, has claimed seven lives in Nwoya District after a Nile Star Coaches bus collided head-on with an oncoming Benz Actros trailer at Lapok Mor village along the Arua route in Uganda.

The accident occurred at around 1:15 AM and involved a bus, registration number UBP 736U, and a trailer, registration numbers SSD 040A and SSD 498C.

Preliminary police findings indicate that the bus driver, Abugo Mandella Kadin, attempted to overtake two vehicles before the collision. He is currently in police custody as investigations continue.

Traffic Police Spokesperson Michael Kananura said four passengers died instantly at the scene, while sixteen others were rushed to Anak Hospital with injuries.

He added that three more victims later died, raising the death toll to seven.

Eyewitnesses who were on the bus alleged that the driver had been driving recklessly throughout the journey from Arua. They further claimed that passengers repeatedly raised concerns, but the conductor dismissed them and responded rudely.

Police have urged members of the public to report reckless driving using toll-free lines, WhatsApp contacts, and official social media platforms, saying timely reporting can help prevent similar tragedies.

Authorities also noted that several road crashes have been recorded in the past week, most of them linked to dangerous overtaking on highways.
