At least seven people were killed and hundreds of livestock stolen on Friday in a wave of bandit attacks across several parts of Meru County and neighbouring Isiolo.
Meru County Peace and Herders Chairman Charles Kamwibua confirmed that two people were killed in the Igembe region when heavily armed attackers raided local homesteads and drove away livestock.
In Ngaremara, Isiolo County, five more people lost their lives as herders attempted to pursue the raiders in an effort to reclaim stolen animals.
The series of attacks left communities reeling, with more than 400 animals stolen in Igembe alone and over 200 others driven away in Tigania. A third raid was reported later in the evening at Maili Saba in Buuri Constituency, further heightening fears among residents already grappling with insecurity.
Local leaders are urging security agencies to intensify patrols and restore calm, warning that the escalating livestock thefts are destabilizing livelihoods and fuelling tensions between communities.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the attacks, but security operations are expected to be stepped up amid growing calls for decisive action against armed bandit groups operating in the region.
