Police in Mumias East have arrested seven people believed to be members of an outlawed gang known as Jeshi Jinga.

Mumias East OCPD Dorice Chemoss said the breakthrough came after residents tipped police about two suspects, identified as Fadhili Mukhola and Imbuli. Upon interrogation, the pair led officers to five other accomplices. One suspect was arrested while smoking
bhang in his home during the day.

Among those arrested is a 17-year-old student who had recently been suspended from school over indiscipline.

Police also apprehended a woman alleged to have acted as bait for unsuspecting boda boda riders. According to Chemoss, the gang used her to pose as a passenger. Once a motorbike stopped to pick her, other gang members would ambush the rider, assault them, and escape with the motorcycle.

A search of the suspects’ homes uncovered crude weapons, including clubs, pangas, knives, slashers, sharpened metal rods, powerful torches, and black jackets believed to be worn during night operations.

Chemoss added that police are still pursuing other gang members and investigating links to a separate group suspected of cattle theft in the area. One youth, identified as Fredrick Keya of Eluwasambi, was mentioned by locals as a habitual night-time thief.

The OCPD urged parents to monitor their children’s behavior and associations closely, warning that the police will intensify patrols and crack down on gatherings such as disco matanga, which criminals often exploit to commit crimes under the cover of night.
