Several Deared Dead as Kinatwa Matatu Collides With a Truck on Mombasa Highway

An unknown number of people have been killed and three others seriously injured in a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a trailer on Kenya’s notoriously dangerous Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

The accident unfolded early on Sunday morning in the Masenyi area near Voi, along the Voi-Samburu stretch, when a Kinatwa Shuttle matatu en route to Mombasa smashed into an oncoming trailer.

Eyewitness accounts and photos from the scene, reveal the matatu’s front end mangled beyond recognition, with both vehicles veered off the road into the bush.

Rescue teams, police and fellow motorists rushed to extricate survivors amid twisted metal and shattered glass.

No official death toll has been released by police or the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), though initial reports suggested at least seven fatalities.

This grisly incident follows closely on the heels of another fatal smash just two days earlier, on Friday, when a PSV overturned in Bumala, Busia County, killing four and injuring dozens more.

Kenya’s roads claimed 3,376 lives in 2024 alone, with the Mombasa corridor accounting for a disproportionate share due to heavy truck traffic, speeding and poor maintenance.
