Several People Feared Trapped As Building Collapses in Nairobi

Four people were rescued on Monday after a partially demolished three-storey building collapsed in Nairobi’s Mukuru-Fuata Nyayo slum in Starehe Sub County.

The building had been earmarked for demolition as part of the removal of structures on the Ngong River riparian land.

The incident, confirmed by Makadara police boss Judith Nyongesa, happened around 3pm.

She said some youths were cutting scrap metal from beacons and pillars of the building on the ground floor before the building collapsed.

Eyewitnesses say more than 30 youths were at the building, competing to cut the metal rods to sell to scrap metal dealers.
