Several US personnel were injured in a suspected rocket attack on Al Asad Airbase in western Iraq, US officials reported.
The attack occurred amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following the recent killings of senior Hamas and Hezbollah leaders.
According to security sources, two Katyusha rockets were fired at the base, with one landing inside.
The Department of Defense confirmed the attack and stated that personnel are conducting a damage assessment.
While the exact number of injured has not been disclosed, officials noted that there have been no critical injuries or fatalities reported.
President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were briefed on the situation, with Biden addressing the ongoing threats from Iran and its proxies.
He emphasized the US’s commitment to defending its forces and responding to any attacks appropriately.
This incident follows a recent US strike in Iraq, deemed self-defense against militants preparing to target US and coalition forces.
Tensions have surged after the deaths of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and a top Hezbollah commander, with Iran and Hezbollah threatening retaliation.
The Al Asad base, a key US military site since 2004, was previously targeted by Iranian-backed militias earlier this year.
