Shabana FC head coach Peter Okidi has praised the recently concluded youth trials in Nyamira and Kisii counties, describing them as a resounding success and a testament to the rich football potential in the region.
The two-day scouting event, held on July 18 and 19, aimed to identify talented players under the age of 23 for possible integration into either the club’s senior or youth squads. The trials kicked off at Sere Grounds in North and West Mugirango before moving to Rigoma Grounds, covering Kitutu Masaba and Borabu constituencies.
“We’ve seen extremely promising and encouraging talent,” said Coach Okidi. “This initiative was thoughtfully designed by both our technical bench and management to tap into the grassroots, where there’s so much potential.”
Only non-Kenya Premier League (KPL) registered players were eligible, with strict requirements for training gear and identification to ensure the focus remained on unearthing raw, undiscovered talent.
Shabana FC, who finished fifth in the 2023/24 FKF Premier League with 53 points, continues to strengthen its development structure. Their youth team is currently topping the Kisii County League with 39 points, nine clear of second-placed Nyaguta Bayern.
Okidi confirmed that standout players from the trials will be slotted into appropriate teams based on their level of readiness. “As a community club, it’s vital we nurture our own. We’d rather develop our talent here than watch it thrive elsewhere,” he noted.
He also appealed to the club’s passionate supporters to continue rallying behind the team as preparations for the new season intensify. “The support from our fans is unmatched, and with them behind us, we can reach new heights.”
The trials reaffirm Shabana FC’s commitment to grassroots football and its strategic focus on building a sustainable, homegrown squad for long-term success.
