On Monday, 26 more bodies were discovered in the Kilifi County town of Shakahola, increasing the total number of dead excavated since Friday, April 21, to 65.
This brings the total number of fatalities linked to the cult this month to 73, including the 8 victims who perished after a police raid that revealed Paul Mackenzie’s nightmare church.
In addition, police today saved nine people—five of whom were in severe condition—from hunger death. They were taken urgently to the hospital for care.
Seven remains were discovered in one grave on Monday, according to authorities, the most from one location since the operation to exhume victims started last week.
The exhumation procedure on the cult leader’s 800-acre property was put on hold on Monday owing to inclement weather but will start tomorrow.
On the enormous property, police also discovered a man who they suspect to be his co-conspirator and ally.
Investigations are being conducted into whether Mackenzie, who is currently in police prison, advised his followers to starve to death so they may meet their maker. Police believe that some of the victims were slain, then interred on the site, rather than dying of starvation.
