Shake-Up at Presidential Security After Breach in Kilifi

By Bonface Mulyungi

President Ruto’s guards have been sent to packing after a startling security breach that saw an intruder grab and nearly wrestle President William Ruto to the ground during a public event in Kilifi.

In the aftermath, William Sawe has been appointed as the new Commandant of Presidential Escort Unit. Sawe steps into one of the most demanding roles in the country, replacing Noah Maiyo, who has been redeployed to Vigilance House.

Sawe until his appointment was serving as C.O Recce Sub Unit.

Juda Mathew Gwiyo, who was serving as Deputy Commandant will proceed on leave pending his retirement. His position is taken by George Kirera as Deputy Commandant.

Kirera until today was serving as staffing officer personnel PEU.

The incident, witnessed by thousands, was more than just a lapse in protocol. For many Kenyans, it was a chilling reminder of the vulnerability of even the highest office. The image of an intruder lunging toward the Head of State has sparked conversations about the pressures and risks faced by those tasked with guarding national leaders.

William Sawe is now the face of resilience and vigilance around the President.

His new assignment is not just about physical protection — it is about restoring public confidence in the safety of the presidency.
