Ugunja, Siaya County – A cloud of grief hangs over Upanda village in Sigomere, Siaya County, as nine members of a single family — a man, his wife, and their seven children — are laid to rest today following a horrific arson attack that shocked the nation.
The victims were killed in the dead of night on April 23, when unknown assailants allegedly set their home ablaze as they slept. The family’s remains will be interred in a mass grave at their homestead, as the community mourns a tragedy that has left many grappling for answers.
Authorities have since arrested Christopher Okello Owino, 56, as the prime suspect in the deadly fire. Owino was captured on April 24 in the Kianda area of Kibra, Nairobi, following a tip-off to detectives. He had reportedly fled Siaya upon learning he was being sought in connection with the crime.
According to police, suspicions were raised by Kibra residents who noted Owino’s sudden presence and his admission that he had traveled to his rural home on the night of the fire — coinciding with the fatal attack.
Following his arrest, Owino was transferred back to Ugunja for further questioning and to face prosecution. His wife was also taken into custody in Migori County, after investigators recovered an oil can believed to have been used to start the fire — a potentially crucial piece of evidence.
As investigations continue, residents are left devastated, seeking justice and healing. Local leaders and religious figures are expected to speak at the burial, calling for peace, solidarity, and a thorough investigation to ensure that such a tragedy never occurs again.
