Siaya County Confirms Its First Cholera Outbreak Case

The Siaya County government confirmed one case of cholera reported in Rarieda sub-county on Thursday.

Dr. Martin Odhiambo K’Onyango, the County’s Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health, stated that the case was identified in Uyoma at the Manyuanda health centre.

He stated that the case was confirmed on Thursday morning after the samples of a patient who had been rushed to the facility for treatment three days prior with Cholera-like symptoms were tested.

“It is true that we have had one confirmed case of Cholera in Siaya County. This case has been identified in Uyoma, and the health facility is handling it,” said the CECM.

“The patient was received three days ago and had all the symptoms of Cholera and we took the specimens, this morning we got the confirmation.”

Dr. K’Onyango stated that county health personnel are already on the ground to closely monitor the situation in order to prevent the bacterial disease from spreading further.

He stated that the patient was treated and is now stable, and that there should be no cause for concern.

The CECM also stated that all county surveillance teams have already been dispatched to conduct follow-up and contact tracing in order to prevent the deadly disease from spreading.

“This is our first case of Cholera confirmed, it is not new in our region…some other counties already have cases. The most important thing is that the patient has been managed, we have all the necessary commodities on the ground,” he stated.

“There is no cause for alarm because our surveillance team has already been dispatched to the ground tracing all the contacts and doing the necessary follow up.”

However, Dr. K’Onyango also called on Siaya residents to now take all the necessary precautions to prevent more cases in the county.
