The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in Kisii is protesting the choice of County Secretary Patrick Lumumba to lead the presidential campaign team of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party.
A group supporting ODM gubernatorial candidate Simba Arati has criticized Mr Lumumba’s unilateral selection, claiming he lacks political support in the area.
Mr Lumumba is a close associate of departing Governor James Ongwae, who said the decision was made “because he is apolitical” by party bosses in Nairobi.
He denounced as forged a paper purporting to contain his signature and claiming that he utilized executive powers to appoint Mr Lumumba as the presidential campaign coordinator.
However, Mr Arati said a public servant cannot be appointed to coordinate partisan political activities.
Mr. Arati stated that the appointees must have spotless integrity and political clout at all levels, from grassroots to regional.
They must also be chosen following extensive consultations with important members of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party.
Mr Ongwae and Mr Arati’s disputes have caused a schism in the party, with Mr Arati’s supporters accusing the governor of sabotaging the MP.
