Six-year-old girl rescued after being kidnapped in Nairobi

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have rescued a 6-year-old girl who had been reported missing on September 22, 2025.

In a statement on Thursday, September 25, DCI said the minor went missing after she was picked up from school by a stranger.

The family’s efforts to trace the six-year-old were futile. Shortly afterward, the child’s mother received a message from an unknown number demanding a ransom of Ksh300,000 for her release.

The girl’s family then reported the kidnapping incident at the Runda Police Station.

“A report filed at Runda Police Station indicated that the girl was picked up from school by an unknown person, and all initial attempts to locate her proved unsuccessful. Soon after, her mother received a message from an unknown number demanding Ksh300,000 for her release,” read part of the DCI statement.

DCI detectives immediately launched a forensic-led operation that directed them to the Soweto slums in Kibra.

The hawkshaws then stormed the area and found the girl sleeping inside an unfinished church building.

The officers recovered the 6-year-old’s school uniform and shoes at the scene.

However, the suspect behind the kidnapping incident had fled moments before the detectives arrived.

“They found the young girl sleeping inside an unfinished church building, wrapped in worn-out beddings.

“Unfortunately, the suspect had fled just moments before officers arrived, leaving the child behind,” DCI stated.

The minor was immediately taken to a medical facility for care and observation.

Meanwhile, detectives have launched a manhunt for the suspect to ensure the kidnapper is brought to justice.

This comes barely a week after detectives arrested 5 suspects in connection with a kidnapping incident in Ruaka.

According to the DCI, detectives launched the operations after the victim’s girlfriend raised an alarm.

The suspects had demanded a ransom of Ksh500,000 from the victim’s girlfriend for his release.

“The operation and subsequent arrest of the suspects unfolded after the victim’s girlfriend’s call to his boyfriend was answered by an unidentified voice that demanded a ransom of Ksh500,000 for the safe return of her boyfriend,” DCI stated.

Following intelligence leads, the DCI detectives trailed the suspects to Ithanga, where they rescued the victim, who was found with multiple injuries and wearing a blood-stained shirt.
