The late Catholic priest Allois Cheruiyot Bett, who was tragically killed last week in Elgeyo Marakwet County, will be laid to rest on Friday, May 30. The burial location will be announced later by the church following consultations with his family.
A solemn requiem mass held on Monday at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral in Eldoret drew hundreds of mourners, including clergy, faithful, and political leaders. During the service, Bishop Dominic Kimengich of the Eldoret Catholic Diocese condemned the brutal killing and urged authorities to act decisively.
“Fr. Bett’s death shall not be in vain. His blood could mark the beginning of lasting peace in Kerio Valley,” said Bishop Kimengich. “Some people have gone so low that they no longer respect life or the rule of law. The government must rise to the occasion. Leaving perpetrators unpunished promotes impunity.”
Nandi Governor Stephen Sang echoed the bishop’s sentiments, criticizing the government for neglecting volatile regions like Kerio Valley. “The people in these banditry-prone areas have suffered for too long. We need firm and sustained action to restore peace,” he said.
Father Bett, who served at St. Matthias Mulumba Tot Parish, was ambushed and fatally shot in Kabartile Village by unknown assailants. The National Police Service (NPS) confirmed the incident, stating that six suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder. However, NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga clarified that preliminary investigations suggest the killing was not related to cattle rustling or regional banditry.
As investigations continue, the Church and local leaders are calling for justice and urging the state to ensure the safety of citizens in restive parts of the North Rift.
