A truck believed to be transporting sodium cyanide has overturned at Kambembe area in Rironi, Kiambu County, causing a spillage of the highly toxic substance.
The Ministry of Health has issued a warning to the public to avoid the area and cooperate with emergency responders as they work to contain the situation.
Public Health and Professional Standards Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni emphasized that sodium cyanide is extremely toxic and that even small amounts ingested or inhaled can be potentially fatal.
She noted that the substance poses a significant threat to aquatic life, and accidental release into waterways can cause extensive fish kills and long-term damage to ecosystems.
“To ensure public safety and manage the risks associated with hazardous substances, we urge the public to avoid the site of the incident and cooperate with our emergency and disaster response teams,” PS Muthoni said.
The Ministry also highlighted the importance of protective measures when handling sodium cyanide, including the use of proper personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, masks, and eye protection.
Adequate ventilation and spill containment systems are also crucial in environments where sodium cyanide is handled or present.
The public is advised to exercise extreme caution and follow all instructions from authorities as the situation unfolds. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
