Somalia’s national army, in coordination with Ugandan troops under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), successfully thwarted an attempted Al-Shabaab assault in the Lower Shabelle region early Friday morning, neutralizing 18 militants in a fierce firefight.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Defence, the joint operation between the Somali National Army (SNA) and the Ugandan People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) unfolded around 6:20 a.m. in the Sabiib and Canoole areas. The clash resulted in the deaths of 18 Al-Shabaab fighters, while pursuit operations were launched to apprehend those who escaped the ambush.

Tragically, the Ministry confirmed that four SNA soldiers were killed during the confrontation, and seven others sustained injuries. Emergency medical assistance was promptly provided to the wounded troops.

“The Ministry of Defence fully commends the bravery and resilience demonstrated by the SNA on the battlefield,” the statement read.

“These forces stood firm in defence of the people and succeeded in defeating the enemy’s attack.”

The Ministry also acknowledged the support provided by international partners, stating, “The Ministry also acknowledges and appreciates the vital support provided by our international partners through aerial strikes that inflicted heavy damage on Al-Shabaab militants.”

Reaffirming the government’s resolve in counterterrorism efforts, the Ministry added, “Once again, the Ministry reiterates the unwavering commitment of the Federal Government of Somalia to combat terrorism, secure the entire country, and ensure that the Somali people live in peace and dignity.”

The incident highlights the continued threat posed by Al-Shabaab and the critical role of regional and international cooperation in securing Somalia against extremist violence.
