Mike Sonko, the Wiper Party candidate for Mombasa governor, has been cleared to run for Mombasa gubernatorial seat on August 9 general elections.
Sonko was released shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.
His clearance procedure took approximately 45 minutes.
The former Nairobi governor arrived at the IEBC headquarters with his running mate, Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo.
Chirau Ali Mwakere, the chairman of the Wiper Party, was also present.
Following a court order directing them to put the Wiper candidate on the ballot, the IEBC invited Sonko for clearance.
Sonko described the event as “victory” after it was cleared.
As soon as it was confirmed that Sonko would be on the ballot, his ecstatic supporters began chanting his name.
They chanted, “Si uchawi ni maombi!” as they expressed their satisfaction.
