Sonko Eyes Political Comeback via NEDP Bus

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is plotting a political comeback through the National Economic Development Party (NEDP), which he hopes to transform into a powerful regional force.

Sonko, who was impeached in 2021 after falling out with former President Uhuru Kenyatta, has set his sights on controlling Nairobi, Machakos, Kilifi, Kwale, Makueni, and Taita Taveta counties.

Sources close to the flamboyant politician say he is positioning the NEDP as a grassroots-driven party aimed at mobilizing the “hustler” base in both urban and rural areas.

According to the party’s website, NEDP is led by controversial gynecologist Dr. John Namu, while Sonko’s former personal assistant Bernard Mulwa serves as secretary-general. The party is expected to receive full registration within three weeks.

In recent months, Sonko has revived his famed rescue team, complete with ambulances and public aid services. Tactics he previously used to build public support during his tenure as Nairobi governor.

His social media pages have also seen a surge in activity, featuring charitable acts, street tours, and political commentary.

Insiders say Sonko’s strategy is to field a large number of MCA candidates under the NEDP banner, with the goal of securing county assembly majorities.

This, he reportedly believes, could give him leverage to influence or even impeach governors across the targeted counties.
